Adverse effects of MAOIs

MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors) are antidepressants that can cause side effects, mainly related to their impact on brain chemicals and interactions with certain foods and medicines. Common issues include headaches, nausea, or feeling dizzy. A more serious concern is the risk of a hypertensive crisis—dangerously high blood pressure—if foods with high tyramine (like aged cheese or cured meats) are eaten. MAOIs may also interact negatively with other medications, increasing the risk of dangerous blood pressure spikes or serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition. Close medical supervision is essential when taking MAOIs to manage these risks.
