adrenal cortex

The adrenal cortex is the outer layer of the adrenal glands, which sit on top of the kidneys. It produces essential hormones that help regulate metabolism, immune response, blood pressure, and stress. These hormones include cortisol, which manages inflammation and energy levels; aldosterone, which controls blood pressure by balancing salt and water; and androgens, which are precursors to sex hormones. The adrenal cortex functions as part of the endocrine system, releasing hormones in response to signals from the brain and other body parts to maintain overall balance and health.
