ADP receptor antagonists

ADP receptor antagonists are medications that block specific receptors on platelets—the blood cells responsible for clotting. These receptors, called P2Y12 receptors, detect a chemical signal called ADP that helps platelets stick together during clot formation. By blocking these receptors, ADP receptor antagonists prevent platelets from clumping, reducing the risk of dangerous blood clots that can cause heart attacks or strokes. They are often prescribed for patients at high risk of clotting, especially following certain heart procedures or events, and help maintain smoother blood flow by keeping platelets from overly aggregating.
