Administrative Divisions of France
France's administrative divisions organize the country into manageable units. At the top are regions, which group together several departments; as of 2023, there are 18 regions, including 13 mainland and 5 overseas. Each region contains multiple departments, with a total of 101 nationwide. Departments are further divided into arrondissements, cantons, and communes—the smallest administrative units. Communes are similar to municipalities or towns. This hierarchical structure helps manage governance, regional planning, and public services efficiently across France, balancing local needs with national oversight.
