Adivasi (India)

Adivasi refers to the indigenous peoples of India who have ancestral roots in the land predating mainstream Indian society. Encompassing diverse communities like Santals, Gonds, and Bhils, they traditionally rely on subsistence agriculture, hunting, and gathering. Adivasis often live in rural, forested regions and preserve unique languages, cultures, and customs. Despite their rich heritage, they frequently face social, economic, and political disadvantages, including limited access to education, healthcare, and land rights. Recognized as Scheduled Tribes by the Indian government, efforts are ongoing to protect their rights and promote their development while respecting their cultural identity.
