ADA-SCID (Adenosine Deaminase Deficiency)
ADA-SCID (Adenosine Deaminase Severe Combined Immunodeficiency) is a rare genetic disorder where the immune system is severely weakened. It results from a deficiency of the enzyme adenosine deaminase, which is essential for the development and function of immune cells like T and B cells. Without enough of this enzyme, harmful substances build up in the body, destroying these immune cells and leaving individuals highly susceptible to infections. ADA-SCID typically appears in infancy and requires prompt treatment, such as enzyme replacement therapy, gene therapy, or bone marrow transplants, to restore immune function and improve survival.
