Activase (recombinant tPA)
Activase (recombinant tissue plasminogen activator or tPA) is a medication used to dissolve blood clots that block blood flow to the brain or lungs. It works by activating the body's natural clot-busting system, breaking down the clot quickly to restore circulation. Activase is commonly used in emergency situations like stroke or severe pulmonary embolism, where rapid clot removal can prevent permanent damage. Administered intravenously, it is most effective when given within a specific time window after symptoms appear. While lifesaving, it carries risks such as bleeding, so it is used under strict medical supervision.
