Actium (modern Greece)

Actium is a small promontory in northwest Greece, famous for the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE. This naval confrontation was between Octavian (later Augustus) and the combined forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. The victory for Octavian marked the end of civil war and led to his dominance over Rome, establishing the Roman Empire. Today, it is a historic site with archaeological remains and the nearby modern town of Aktio. The battle's significance lies in its role in shifting power from the Roman Republic to the imperial system, shaping Western history.
