Acquisition-Learning Distinction

The acquisition-learning distinction, proposed by language expert Stephen Krashen, describes two different ways we develop language skills. "Acquisition" is an unconscious, natural process that occurs when we immerse ourselves in a language through meaningful communication, similar to how children learn their first language. "Learning," on the other hand, is a conscious, formal process involving studying rules and grammar, like classroom lessons. Effective language development often combines both: acquisition for fluency and confidence, and learning for understanding rules and structure.
