Acquired Brain Injuries

An acquired brain injury (ABI) is any damage to the brain that occurs after birth, caused by events like accidents, strokes, infections, or lack of oxygen. This type of injury can affect thinking, memory, emotions, movement, and communication. The severity and specific effects vary depending on the location and extent of the damage. Unlike a congenital condition, ABIs are not present at birth and can happen at any age. Recovery often involves rehabilitation to regain skills and adapt to changes, but some effects may be long-lasting or permanent.
