acetate film

Acetate film is a transparent sheet made from cellulose acetate, a type of plastic derived from natural cellulose fibers like cotton or wood pulp. Historically used as a medium for motion picture prints, photographic negatives, and overhead transparencies, it offers clarity and durability. Acetate film is flexible, resistant to moisture, and can be easily handled and stored. However, it is sensitive to heat and light, which can cause it to degrade or become sticky over time. While largely replaced by more modern digital formats, acetate film remains significant for archival purposes and certain artistic applications.
