Aceh peace process
The Aceh peace process was a diplomatic effort to end prolonged conflict between the Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), which sought independence for Aceh. Starting in 2005, peace agreements involved disarming militants, granting Aceh special autonomy, and addressing economic and political grievances. International mediators and local leaders helped facilitate dialogue, leading to a ceasefire and gradual reintegration. The process aimed to ensure stability, rebuild the region, and respect Aceh’s unique identity while maintaining Indonesia’s sovereignty. It marked a significant step toward sustainable peace and reconciliation in the region.
