Abrasive wear
Abrasive wear occurs when rough or hard particles or surfaces grind against a material’s surface, gradually removing material over time. This process is common in machinery and tools, where friction and contact with abrasive substances lead to erosion or thinning of surfaces. It can happen through two main ways: a harder surface scratching or grinding a softer one, or particles becoming embedded and acting like tiny abrasives. The result is a smoother, often thinner surface, which can weaken the material and impair its function. Proper maintenance and protective coatings can help reduce abrasive wear.
