Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Indigenous peoples of Australia, with diverse cultures and histories dating back tens of thousands of years. Aboriginal Australians mainly occupy the mainland and Tasmania, while Torres Strait Islanders are from the islands between northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. They have rich spiritual, social, and artistic traditions, and their connection to land and community is central to their identity. Recognized as the original inhabitants, they have contributed significantly to Australia's cultural heritage but have also faced ongoing challenges due to colonization and systemic inequalities. Today, efforts continue to acknowledge and respect their rights and heritage.
