aberration of light

Aberration of light is a phenomenon where the apparent position of a star or other celestial object shifts due to the motion of the observer, typically Earth moving through space. This effect makes the object seem slightly offset from its true position and is caused by the finite speed of light combined with the observer’s velocity. Imagine walking in the rain; even if the rain is falling straight down, moving forward makes the rain seem to come at an angle. Similarly, as Earth moves, light appears to arrive from a different direction, creating a small, predictable shift in the observed position of objects in the sky.
