Abdera (ancient city)
Abdera was an ancient Greek city located on the coast of Thrace, in what is now modern Greece. Founded around the 7th century BCE, it was known for its cultural and philosophical significance, particularly as the home of the early Greek philosopher Democritus, who proposed the idea that matter is composed of tiny, indivisible particles called atoms. Abdera was a bustling port and a center for trade and learning. Over centuries, it changed hands several times and declined in importance, but its legacy endures mainly through its association with early atomic theory and classical Greek thought.
