Abdülmecid I

Abdülmecid I was an Ottoman Sultan who ruled from 1839 to 1861. He is known for initiating important reforms called the Tanzimat, which aimed to modernize the empire’s administration, military, and legal systems to strengthen it and improve governance. During his reign, he worked to modernize infrastructure and promoted education and equality among citizens. Abdülmecid was also the first Ottoman sultan to officially declare and sign a constitution in 1856, marking a move toward constitutional governance. His efforts helped begin the gradual transformation of the Ottoman Empire into a more modern, centralized state.
