Abakua
Abakua is a traditional secret society originating among Afro-Cuban communities, closely linked to their Yoruba roots and history of resistance. It functions as a social and spiritual organization that preserves cultural practices, rituals, and music, often involving initiation ceremonies and unique symbolism. Historically, it helped protect African identity and provided social cohesion among enslaved and freed Africans. Today, Abakua continues to influence Cuban culture, especially through dance, music, and community bonds, while remaining somewhat secretive in its practices and membership.
