AASU Movement

The Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Movement was a prominent political and social campaign in Assam, India, during the late 20th century. It primarily aimed to protect the rights of local Assamese people by opposing large-scale illegal immigration from neighboring countries, especially Bangladesh. The movement sought to safeguard cultural, economic, and political interests by advocating for stricter immigration controls. It played a key role in raising awareness about regional identity and led to significant political changes, including the Assam Accord of 1985, which aimed to address these concerns through a formal agreement with the government.
