AAF (Army Air Forces)

The Army Air Forces (AAF) was the aerial warfare service component of the U.S. Army during World War II, established in 1941 to organize, train, and deploy military aircraft and personnel. It served as the primary air combat and strategic bombing force, responsible for missions such as air superiority, reconnaissance, and support for ground troops. In 1947, the AAF was reorganized into the independent U.S. Air Force, becoming a separate branch of the military focused entirely on air and space operations.
