AADC
AADC, or Aromatic Amino Acid Decarboxylase deficiency, is a rare genetic disorder affecting the brain's ability to produce certain chemicals called neurotransmitters, specifically dopamine and serotonin. These chemicals are vital for regulating movement, mood, and sleep. Without enough AADC enzyme, neurotransmitter production is impaired, leading to symptoms like movement difficulties, muscle stiffness, oozing movements, and developmental delays. Because of the neurotransmitter imbalance, individuals often experience severe neurological challenges. AADC is diagnosed through genetic and biochemical testing, and while there is currently no cure, treatments aim to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
