A1AT
Alpha-1 antitrypsin (A1AT) is a protein made by the liver that helps protect the lungs from damage caused by enzymes meant to fight infections. If A1AT levels are low or its function is impaired, these enzymes can harm lung tissue, leading to conditions like emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Some people inherit a deficiency, which can increase their risk of lung and liver issues. A1AT deficiency is diagnosed with a blood test and managed with therapies that may include replacing the missing protein or other treatments to protect lung health.
