A. M. J. G. (Hans) F. van der Meer
A. M. J. G. (Hans) F. van der Meer is a Dutch scientist renowned for developing a technique called "stochastic cooling," which helps control and improve the quality of particle beams in accelerators. This innovation was crucial for enhancing experiments in high-energy physics, including the discovery of the W and Z bosons. Van der Meer's work earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1984, shared with Carlo Rubbia. His contributions significantly advanced our ability to study fundamental particles, deepening our understanding of the universe's basic building blocks.
