A’a lava

A’a lava is a type of volcanic lava characterized by its rough, jagged surface and high viscosity. It flows slowly and cools quickly, forming uneven, sharp-edged formations. Unlike smoother, sheety lava flows called pahoehoe, a’a lava's dense, crumbly texture is due to its thicker consistency and the way gases escape as it cools. It typically originates from basaltic eruptions and is common in places like Hawaii, where volcanic activity produces these rugged flows. A’a lava's distinctive surface makes it recognizable and indicates a more viscous, slower-moving lava type during eruptions.
