5th Monarchs
The Fifth Monarchs were a religious and political movement in 17th-century England, primarily during the English Civil War. They believed that a future divine kingdom, ruled by Jesus Christ, was imminent and would soon establish a perfect, righteous government on Earth. Their name refers to their interpretation of biblical prophecy, specifically from the Book of Daniel, predicting a series of monarchs culminating in Christ’s reign. They aimed to see a divine monarchy replacing earthly kings, often advocating for the overthrow of existing governments. While they held strong convictions, their movement was short-lived and deeply intertwined with the turbulent religious politics of the time.
