477th Bombardment Group
The 477th Bombardment Group was a United States Air Force unit established during World War II, primarily composed of African American servicemen as part of the Army Air Forces' efforts to integrate the military. It was tasked with training and preparing for combat as a heavy bomber group, focusing on aircraft like the B-25 Mitchell. Although it played a significant role in advancing racial integration in the military, it did not see combat during the war. The group helped pave the way for full military desegregation and served as a stepping stone toward a more inclusive armed forces.
