Article 370 was a temporary provision in the Indian Constitution that granted special autonomy to the region of Jammu and Kashmir. It allowed this region to have its own separate constitution, laws, and considerable self-governance, unlike other Indian states. The Indian government retained control over only defense, foreign affairs, and communications. August 5, 2019, the Indian government revoked Article 370, making Jammu and Kashmir a union territory, thus integrating it fully into India’s legal framework without the special privileges previously granted. This move significantly changed the region’s political and legal landscape.
