2011 Joplin Tornado

The 2011 Joplin Tornado was a devastating EF5 tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri, on May 22. It was one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history, with winds exceeding 200 mph. The tornado obliterated neighborhoods, causing extensive damage to around 7,500 structures, including homes, schools, and hospitals. Tragically, it resulted in 158 fatalities and over 1,000 injuries. The storm lasted approximately 38 minutes and traveled about six miles through the city. In the aftermath, the community faced significant rebuilding challenges and implemented improved emergency preparedness measures to better respond to future disasters.
