1980 Protests
The 1980 protests primarily refer to the Polish Solidarity movement, which emerged in response to economic hardship and political repression under Communist rule. Workers and citizens united to demand better working conditions, freedom of speech, and democratic reforms. Led by Lech Wałęsa, Solidarity became Poland’s first independent trade union, challenging the Communist government’s authority. The protests sparked a broader movement for human rights and democracy across Eastern Europe. Although the government initially cracked down, Solidarity's perseverance contributed significantly to the eventual fall of Communist regimes in the region in the late 1980s.
