1959 Baoulé Revolt
The 1959 Baoulé Revolt was a resistance movement by the Baoulé people in Côte d'Ivoire, who opposed French colonial rule and local authorities trying to impose taxes and control. Motivated by a desire to preserve their traditions and independence, they organized protests and armed resistance. The revolt was part of broader struggles across Africa during decolonization, highlighting local frustrations with colonial governance. Although suppressed, it symbolized early efforts of Africans fighting for self-determination and played a role in the eventual independence of Côte d'Ivoire in 1960.
