1958 Venezuelan coup d'état

The 1958 Venezuelan coup d'état was a military-led overthrow of President-elect Rómulo Gallegos, who had replaced authoritarian leader Marcos Pérez Jiménez. Tensions grew as Pérez Jiménez's dictatorship suppressed opposition and limited political freedoms. In January 1958, the military and opposition groups united, removing Pérez Jiménez from power and paving the way for democracy. This event marked the end of nearly a decade of military dictatorship and led to the establishment of a democratic government in Venezuela.
