1947 Uprising

The 1947 Uprising, also known as the Royal Indian Navy Mutiny, was a rebellion by sailors in British India’s navy in February 1947. It was sparked by dissatisfaction with poor conditions, pay, and treatment, amid growing feelings of nationalism and the push for independence from British rule. The mutiny spread to other parts of the navy and involved around 20,000 personnel. Although it was suppressed quickly, it highlighted widespread unrest and contributed to accelerating the end of British colonial rule in India later that year. The uprising is seen as a significant event in India’s path toward independence.
