1947-48 War
The 1947-48 war was fought between newly independent India and the newly created state of Pakistan over the land of Jammu and Kashmir. Both nations claimed the region, leading to conflict. The war began after the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir chose to join India under regional pressure, prompting Pakistan to oppose this decision. Despite several battles, the conflict ended in 1948 with a United Nations-brokered ceasefire, resulting in a divided Kashmir: Pakistan administering some areas and India others. The dispute over Kashmir remains unresolved, contributing to ongoing tensions between the two countries.
