1946 Referendum on Women's Suffrage
The 1946 Referendum on Women's Suffrage was a vote held in Australia to determine whether women should be granted full voting rights and eligibility for the Senate. Prior to this, women in some states could vote, but there was no nationwide guarantee. The referendum proposed amending the Australian Constitution to confirm women’s right to vote in federal elections and stand for federal office. The majority of Australians approved the change, making women's suffrage at the federal level constitutionally official and ensuring women could fully participate in national politics.
