1937 Basque autonomy Statute
The 1937 Basque Autonomy Statute was a legal framework established during the Spanish Civil War that granted the Basque Country a degree of self-government, including its own government, police, and cultural institutions. It recognized the Basque region as a distinct political entity within Spain, aimed at preserving Basque language and identity. However, its implementation was limited due to the ongoing conflict. After the war, the Franco dictatorship abolished Basque autonomy, and the statute remained unrecognized until Spain's democratization in the late 20th century.
