1857 revolt

The 1857 revolt, also known as the Indian Rebellion or Sepoy Mutiny, was a major uprising against British rule in India. Indian soldiers (sepoys) in the British East India Company's army felt betrayed by new gun cartridges rumored to be greased with cow and pig fat, offending Hindu and Muslim beliefs. This sparked widespread protests among soldiers, farmers, and civilians across northern India. The revolt aimed to challenge British dominance but was eventually suppressed. It marked a significant turning point, leading to direct British government control over India and inspiring future independence movements.
