On October 17, 1989, a significant earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area in California. Known as the Loma Prieta earthquake, it registered a magnitude of 6.9 and caused widespread destruction, including the collapse of the Bay Bridge and significant damage in San Francisco and surrounding areas. The earthquake resulted in 63 fatalities, over 3,700 injuries, and substantial property damage, estimated at around $6 billion.
