10th Battle of the Isonzo
The 10th Battle of the Isonzo, fought in August 1917 during World War I, was a major attempt by Italy to break through Austro-Hungarian lines along the Isonzo River. Despite heavy casualties, Italian forces made limited gains in harsh mountainous terrain. The battle demonstrated the difficulty of mountain warfare and the high human cost of trying to force a breakthrough on well-defended positions. Although the Italians advanced somewhat, the strategic objective remained unachieved, exemplifying the stalemate and brutal conditions characteristic of the Isonzo battles.
